Rocky Mountain Road Trip Day 15

The morning of our penultimate day of our adventure we spent sipping coffee, and playing games with the Shutts. It is always such a pleasure to spend time with old friends as if no time had passed. Even better when the kids also get along. My very strong regret was that we did not take any pictures of our reunion! I think I may have exhausted my picture taking capacity after our Lake Louise/Lake Moraine outing. We thanked the Shutt's for their hospitality by leaving behind all our excess belongings. Who doesn't want 1/3 of a Costco jar of peanut butter or 3/4 of a box of fruit bars???

We planned a side detour on our way back to Edmonton to visit my Aunt Trudy and Uncle Bob. They live in the delightful town of Big Valley. We got to see the tourism train arrive and the community members who dress in garb from the 1800s to greet them. There are a couple of very impressive historical collections in town from thousands of different tools to historical population data and artifacts. I was privileged to see my Uncle's room of collectibles, particularly items related to Wyatt Earp and Roy Rogers. Again I failed to take photos of the reunion, but I treasure every moment spent with my Western family.

As we continued on to Edmonton, our final reunions fell through. It was just not possible to meet up with everyone on our list. This means we have more people to see the next time we come out west! Our airport motel was quite the sight. We had 2 rooms, but not adjoining. The kids were upstairs while Chris and I had a deluxe jacuzzi room. David was the first to try it out, getting his swim suit on and filling it up while Chris ordered pizza. I drove over to the airport to return our trusty steed as our flight was an 8am departure the next morning.

Happy Thanksgiving

I am very blessed with a delightful family even if we can't see each other as often as we would like, wonderful friends who bring me joy, the fortunate position that our jobs are relatively secure, that we live in a country that is doing pretty well with respect to keeping our people safe, and that we have become more aware of those segments of society that are NOT kept safe and we are trying to rectify that. I am hopeful that the awakening that has accelerated during these times of forced introspection continues and is a lasting legacy to the younger generation.

We had a great Covid-Thanksgiving. Although we were unable to visit with our family, we had a delicious outdoor Thanksgiving dinner with our Toronto bubble on Saturday afternoon. Lots of food, conversation, and music.

David was super excited for outdoor Thanksgiving. No pants or shoes but he did have his mask!

On Sunday we enjoyed a socially distant visit in the backyard. We opted to order in dinner from a local restaurant as a show of support for small businesses that must shut down with very little notice and full freezers! Cumin Kitchen provided a feast that the whole family enjoyed.

On the holiday Monday we arrived just before 9am at Rouge National Park for an 8.5km family hike.

Chris was dressed for adventure!

I was very thankful that we got to the park before 9am. By the time we left, the trails were crowded enough that masks were a good idea and there was a traffic jam looking for parking!

Christmas Wish List

Apologies to my regular 2 readers, I am interrupting my normal broadcasting for this special announcement:

OK The boys are generally happy with anything they get. They would be satisfied with some cheap crap from the Dollar store. Somehow I didn't think this was a satisfactory answer to the question "What would the boys want?" So, rather than just write a list for each member of the family, I will post a list here. The potential benefit could be if you comment on the blog if you are getting something specific (a particular book, or a specific gift item) there won't be any of those embarrassing buying the same thing moments. And if I think of something else I can just update here. I promise the boys do not read my blog :) I will remove this post after Christmas.

Lucas (8) and Michael (6 1/2):
construction kits
lego
role playing stuff (swords, nerf blasters, costumes)
zombies, monsters, lord of the rings related toys

coloring books

David (2 1/2):
little figurines (knights, dragons, animals)
train related things
push and pull toys
car ramp
sit n spin
pretend stuff (doctor kit, tools, food)
